Change The Headlines Please!!....

Hey! All, ever wondered why FB is gaining ground and mainstream print media losing readership [despite increasing circulation]. The ans is fairly simple…the same reason why Sooraj Barjatiya rakes in the moolah while the movie movement that tried to portray the ‘stark realities’ of life [aka art movies] went under quite some back……

This is also the same reason why delhi times / sports pages have 10 times more readership than front page or national page….What am saying is, pick up 2day’s TOI…and scan the pages…the headlines…

It makes one feel…that is world is sick, psychopathic place…but man gimme a break…I see great people, even greater feelings / gestures…showing up everywhere, every moment….how the heck…man this doesn’t show-up in any of our headlines…

[as customary digression…heck…as I want to convey…is the cross b/w ‘hell’ and the popular 4 letter word starting with f…when u wanna express something casually disdainful…and heck…brings in a bit of a novelty factor…intends to be both these words and probably neither fully…all at the same time…like in any other portmanteau word…while heck isn’t probably technically portmanteau..]

Denny T [ole jovial journo friend of my bbay 1st innings days - who I hvnt met for ages now]…and his ilk..the ecoT brigade, gave me the answer in the mid-late 90s…why is it that edoT/biz std had nice readable positive news, while the tois and its brethren had to contend with a good deal of trash [beyond the sports – not sure abt this actually, with cricket dominating so much now].

The biz journos, were know to seek news worthy info…they had all their assigned ‘beats’…and used to go all around bbay [and select other places I guess] scouting for matter [stories as they call]….with good 2 doz or more positive, energetic people at work doing that daily..one ended up getting nice, freshly baked brownies for breakfast news everyday….and all those tidbits…and I seemed to grow as a professional everyday…in those early green horn days….more importantly every news papers seemed different..

ET led with news; BS…had a class of its own; while Businessline..carved its own zing….none other existed…and each reader looked for multiple newspaper…and each newspaper moulding readers in their own delectable way….…

I remember journos like Paddy [I think he was the first to open the lid from Harshad Mehta scam – not sure though] were know rub there plams with glee when they had a breaking news 1 day ahead of the rest [these days, even that’s not possl, the shelf life of breaking news has reduced to 1 hr or so]

The mainstream newspapers….do [did] it very differently….i suspect…guess with such a large territory to cover..guess the journos/news agencies..depend upon the police stations ‘beats’…all the news I guess comes from police diaries……and therefore the newspapers are filled with such stories…mainly negative….guess no one goes to a police stn to report when there is an inspiring story to tell..

Am pretty sure, that there enough stories of enterprising young people, goodness happening in the streets everyday, doting parents/responsible children making giving a blissful dose of delight to each other everyday – helping in home/office/kitchen work….am sure there are enough idols in real life that can be highlighted…so we do not have to resort to vicarious pleasure of…Indian Idols and less uplifting reality shows

Hmm..in hindsight I am not quite surprised…when I realize that in the 5-6 years that I was in corpo world, I read only biz newspapers…and didn’t miss the tois at all..

Time we changed the headlines man….they suck….i don’t want me and the rest of us starting the day with a morose beginning….Newspapers!!! Get creative man in sourcing info…there are 101 new ideas I can think of….shed the ole means…if u wanna survive…and more importantly if you can influence the building of a inspired society with greater positive energy……u guys can start with publishing one good blog a day…whoa!!!!

People want a good dose of inspiration, and a relaxed state of mind…and good news of people around…..thas why sports and FB sell….period..

Dura Pahada Sundara [Far-away Mountains are Beautiful]

I realize how seriously we take a place we visit specifically to see it – an event in itself, and how much taken for granted are those places that we can hop in an out with regularity and ease. Interestingly I had never wrote or thought of writing about Puri or Konark or Cuttack. Places for which reams have been and can be written. The history, the culture, the cuisine and the local chutzpah [espl. Puri / Cuttack]. Even more interestingly, I have never pondered enough on these places and their unique niceties to have them simmering in my cerebral consciousness. They are somewhere deep there sedimented at best; and at [likely] worst, I do not have the desired ammunition to do justice to write anything substantial. Probably, I will have to resort to the frivolous flourish of the might of the language as a cover. A point to note - I have never seen the Bali Yatra [Cuttackis don’t faint please]. The Puri beach and temple I have always felt is my backyard [so had the taken for granted attit

Foreign Universities in India: Boon or Bane?

Dr. Partha S Mohapatra (Originally written in March, 2010)   The cabinet yesterday gave its nod to the “Foreign Universities Bill”. I first read the report on Wall Street Journal about the Indian Governments’ intention to open up the higher education sector to foreign universities [Delhi Seeks to Admit Foreign Universities,  Wall Street Journal June 11, 2009 ].  Subsequently, I read similar reports in other newspapers.  Most of the se reports make a compelling story to allow foreign universities to operate in India. The main argument that is made is on following premises: i)      It will save India about $4 billion in foreign exchange [“Leading foreign institutes may soon be here” Economic Times , 11 Sep 2006”]. ii)    India loses because of brain drain when brilliant people go abroad and study and stay there. iii)   We need foreign investments because the government does not have money needed to invest in higher education and private sector is unwilling

Energising The Employability Magic Of Professional Education

The private engineering colleges and b-schools are going through another bad phase. The overcapacity, because of which many colleges are reeling under significant financial stress, is intriguing when seen against the backdrop of a modest Gross Enrollment Ratio. The reasons are quite straight forward, students enroll into professional education for jobs.  Starting from the mid-1990s, riding on an economy growing at a fast clip with the promise of dollar jobs students thronged the higher education professional courses. When the global economies plateaued and the Indian growth rate isn’t much better, job creation is poor and so also is the demand to join professional courses. The professional education institutes, must know that the role they need to play is to create industry worthy professionals. That needs to be the focus.  For the past 20 years, institutes have focussed on two areas – infrastructure and admission network. This strategy worked, when large organized businesses h
